African American Day Parade in Harlem: A Celebration of Culture and Community

African American Day Parade in Harlem: A Celebration of Culture and Community This year’s African American Day Parade in Harlem was a hit. I had the chance to experience it from the VIP section and let me tell you—it was unforgettable. The energy, the pride, the people—it was all there. I met some incredible people, including Bianca Bonnie and Lil Mama from the iconic “Chicken Noodle Soup” era—yes, both were in the parade! And of course, the legendary Dapper Dan made an appearance, reminding us why fashion and Harlem go hand in hand. The HBCU fraternities and sororities showed up strong, stepping with pride and purpose. The bands? Electric. The dancers? Unstoppable. Every block was alive with rhythm, joy, and unapologetic culture.

People love to say African Americans don’t have culture—but this parade is culture. From Soul, Caribbean music to Afrobeats, it was a beautiful fusion of Black diasporic expression. Whether you were repping the Bronx, Brooklyn, Jamaica, Nigeria, or Harlem itself, the message was clear: we celebrate us. And yes—I even handed out one of my fashion designer coloring books. Seeing folks light up over it reminded me why I do this work. Representation matters. Creativity matters. Community matters. It was a good day. A great day. Harlem, thank you for showing up and showing out.
