Harlem Week: Rise Up NY Recap

Harlem Week: Rise Up NY Recap

I attended Rise Up NY for Harlem Week, and the energy was incredible. The turnout was strong, with a mostly mature crowd that brought a grounded, soulful vibe to the evening.

Right off the bat, I ran into Dapper Dan—if you know, you know. The legendary fashion designer who styled Black hip-hop artists in the ’80s and now collaborates with Gucci was in the mix, adding his signature flair to the event.

The performances were a nostalgic ride:

  • Jeff Redd sang his classic from Strictly Business, setting the tone.
  • Chubb Rock followed with his unmistakable voice and presence.
  • Flex Alexander made a stylish appearance on stage, looking sharp.
  • Crystal Waters stole the show with her high-energy performance and vibrant dancers—she had the most dynamic presence of the night.

Doug E. Fresh lit Harlem up. A proud Harlem native, he gave a shoutout to his son’s donut shop in the neighborhood. His beatboxing was unreal—nearly two minutes straight—and he looked fantastic doing his signature Dougie dance. His words of encouragement and love for Harlem were powerful.

Finally, Johnny Gill closed the night in a vibrant green suit, radiating energy. He brought church to the stage, praising God before stepping into the crowd and singing directly to
